Sri Lanka U23 vs Oman, ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup: Match Preview

Match Details

Sri Lanka U23 vs Oman, 3rd Match, Group A

7th December 2018, 9:45 AM IST

Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

The Premadasa Stadium in Colombo is one of the oldest stadiums in Sri Lanka. It has hosted over 9 Tests, 125 ODIs and 35 T20Is. The pitch here is a typical subcontinental pitch where the ball will take turn. However, it is generally a decent track to bat on and the team winning the toss will most likely want o put runs on the board.

This match will kick-start proceedings in Group A which comprises India U23, Sri Lanka U23, Afghanistan U23 and Oman. All Group A fixtures are scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka and hosts Sri Lanka U23 will face off against Oman in the first game of the group stage.

Sri Lanka U23 have a few players who have the experience of playing international cricket. While the likes of Kamindu Mendis, Sandun Weerakkody and Jeffrey Vandersay have been around the national team, Asela Gunaratne has been out of favour for a while now.

Oman have had a successful run this year. They finished the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 with a 100% record. However, they will have their task cut out against the hosts who go into the clash as favourites.

Probable Playing XI

Sri Lanka U23

Charith Asalanka (c), Shammu Ashan, Sandun Weerakkody (wk), Kamindu Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Nishan Madushka, Jeffrey Vandersay, Lasith Ambuldeniya, Nishan Peiris, Shehan Madushanka, Asitha Fernando

Zeeshan Maqsood (c), Aqib Ilyas, Ahmad Fayyaz Butt, Ajay Lalcheta, Bilal Khan, Jatinder Singh, Jayesh Odedra, Khawar Ali, Suraj Kumar (wk), Mohammad Nadeem, TK Bhandari

My Dream XI for the game

Sandun Weerakkody played ODI cricket almost two years back when Sri Lanka toured South Africa. The attacking left-handed wicket-keeper batsman also struck a fifty in that 3-match series. He is an obvious choice as the wicket-keeper.

Shammu Ashan has been impressive in his short domestic career. He averages close to 48 in first-class cricket. Meanwhile, Asela Gunaratne is a renowned name in Sri Lankan cricket and he will be eager to do well. On the other hand, Jatinder Singh and Khanwar Ali are reliable options with the bat as far as Oman are concerned.

Alternatives: Aqib Ilyas, TK Bhandari

Kamindu Mendis has made headlines with his ambidextrous bowling. He made his international debut in the T20I against England earlier this October.

Oman skipper, Zeeshan Maqsood has been in terrific form in the recent past and will hope to lead from the front.

Bilal Khan was Oman’s standout bowler in the ICC WCL Division 3 league. He picked up 12 wickets in 5 games and played a crucial role in Oman’s undefeated run. Nishan Peiris, Shehan Madushanka and Jeffrey Vandersay have been on the fringes of the Sri Lankan team in recent times. They will want to impress the selectors with some solid outings in this tournament.

Alternatives: Asitha Fernando Jayesh Odedra

Captain: Asela Gunaratne

Vice-captain: Zeeshan Maqsood

Player to watch out for: Zeeshan Maqsood

The 31-year-old Oman skipper has been absolutely brilliant in the recent past. In the recently concluded ICC WCL Division 3 league, he amassed 145 runs at an average of 72.50 and picked up 4 wickets as well. Hence, he will look to set an example for his team with some inspirational performances.
