San Antonio Spurs vs. Utah Jazz, Fantasy Team and Preview

San Antonio Spurs: Saturday’s 9-game schedule kicks off with a random early game between the Jazz and Spurs in Salt Lake. Derrick White is still out for the Spurs, so Bryn Forbes likely starts as the de facto point guard, while Patty Mills sees added run off the bench. Of the two I’d rather play Mills, who has the higher usage and is the better per-minute producer. DeMar DeRozan sees a pretty healthy usage bump of 2.8% with White off the floor. The Jazz are stout defensively, but given the volume, DeRozan sees in this offense I think he makes for a fine play. LaMarcus Aldridge may have to tangle with Rudy Gobert here, which isn’t ideal. Utah is up to first in defensive efficiency against centers, and LMA has played the majority of his minutes at center this season.

Utah Jazz: This matchup actually bodes pretty well for the Jazz, who are expected to score 114.3 points tonight. That’s a 5.3-point bump on their season average. San Antonio isn’t as awful defensively as they were early in the season, but they still have some weak spots. San Antonio already struggled to defend point guards, and White’s absence is a pretty big deal.White ranks sixth among point guards in defensive real plus-minus. Mills and Forbes…not so much. Those 2 rank near the bottom in the same category, which makes Ricky Rubio look like an appealing option. The Spurs are just 23rd in defensive rating against point guards, as well. Rubio isn’t the most reliable DFS option, but he’s still averaging 1.02 FP/min on the season and this game is expected to be closely contested. Donovan Mitchell was on fire for a while, but he’s cooled a bit since the Jazz have gotten healthier. He still leads the Jazz with a 33.4% usage rate on the year, but I prefer targeting him when the Jazz are without some of their other ball-handlers. San Antonio has also been effective defensively against shooting guards (13th). Mitchell still has plenty of upside, but his floor this season has been consistently lower than it was last year. The minutes floor for Jae Crowder is higher than the one for Derrick Favors, but Favors is far more productive on a per-minute basis (1.07 FP/min for Favors, 0.86 for Crowder). Neither is an awful option, but I’ll side with Favors here considering the Spurs can roll some big lineups out there. Rudy Gobert consistently seems to go overlooked despite crushing all the time. He’s up to 1.28 fantasy points per minute on the year, and he’s Utah’s best shot at containing LaMarcus Aldridge. The Spurs are strong defensively against centers, but we’re not really leaning on Gobert to score a bunch of points.
